Molokai Challenge fundraising event set for Saturday

These Youth in Motion kids will be some of the beneficiaries of Saturday's fundraiser.

The Molokai Challenge, in its eighth year as a local fundraiser for youth organizations, will hit the water Saturday.

The winds are expected to be decent when the teams head out of D.T. Fleming beach on Maui on their 18-mile journey to Kamalo Wharf. Expect high tides with the full moon on Saturday.

The event is open to teams that will compete in non-motorized watercraft. When they arrive at Kamalo, the teams will continue downwind 10 miles to Malama Park in Kaunakakai. A youth celebration will take place at Malama Park from 4-8 p.m.

Organizer Clare Mawae, of Youth in Motion, will have two of her own children, 9 year-old Alex Mawae and 11 year-old sister, Josie, taking on the challenge of crossing the channel on stand-up paddle boards.

Josie and Alex have already collected over $1,000 of pledges for the Youth in Motion team. All registered teams must have their own escort boat.

Off-island teams contribute one-fourth of the money raised to Youth in Motion, another fourth to a Molokai youth fund, another fourth to the team’s charity of choice and one-fourth into funding next year’s event. Local teams can put up to 50 percent to their charity of choice.
