Volleyball girls get preseason tuneup at Kamehameha Maui Invitational

By Ke’van Dudoit

The Molokai girls volleyball team saw its first action yesterday since winning the state championship last November.

It was the first time the team had played together and it showed. With only five players returning from last year’s roster, the lady Farmers lost their first match against Sage Hill High School from California, in straight sets, 25-15, 25-14.

In the second match, Molokai faced Seabury II and lost in three sets 25-21, 24-26, 26-24. With a couple of close calls down the stretch, this match could have easily gone either way.

This preseason tournament, the 2011 Kamehameha Maui Invitational, was all about gaining experience and trying different players in different positions.

As the defending Division II state champs, the lady Farmers are one of the highlights of the tournament. Also competing is five-time state champion Hawaii Baptist Academy, 2005 state champion St. Francis, along with top schools from California.

After talking to a lot of coaches, it seems like this season is pretty much up for grabs in the Maui Interscholastic League. Most teams lost a lot of talent due to graduation so expect to see a few different teams knocking on the door for success. The team that will emerge is the team that can take raw athletes and turn them into student athletes.

The lady Farmers return to the court today at Kamehameha Maui Middle School. The team plays in Pool C, which includes Laguna Blanca, Lahainaluna and Hana, starting at 6:30 p.m.
