Farmers dominate MIL football leading up to season finale

Senior quarterback Keola DeMello leads the Farmers with touchdowns after three victories in three games. This run took place in the controlled scrimmage on Molokai Sept. 17.

For the second time this season, the Molokai Farmers put the hurt on the Seabury Hall Spartans in 8-man football, except this time they kept score.

Behind the 269-yard, four-touchdown performance of quarterback Keola DeMello, the Farmers trounced Seabury 58-6 on Saturday in Maui.

The two teams played on Sept. 17 on Molokai to open the second Maui Interscholastic League Division II season of football. The Farmers held firm control over the scrimmage played without referees or a scorekeeper. The Spartans failed to score while Molokai found the end zone on almost every possession.

Saturday’s game was the second time playing with referees, and just like last week’s performance against St. Anthony, Molokai dominated both sides of the ball. Molokai blasted the Trojans 54-22 on Oct. 1 in Maui. DeMello scored four touchdowns in that game with Noah Caparida adding three TDs.

Molokai gets one more shot at St. Anthony to make up for last year’s 24-12 loss at home to the Trojans. The teams finish the season at the Molokai High School field this coming Saturday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m.

Still in its second year as a club sport, 8-man MIL football hopes to receive sanctioning in its third year that would include a state championship tournament.
