Pascua Store robbed at gunpoint, register recovered

Rosida Montero, owner of Pascua Store, said the cash register stolen Feb. 4 is still in the possession of the police while the investigation is ongoing.

In the early morning hours of Feb. 4, Pascua Store in Kaunakakai was robbed at gunpoint.

The suspect — a male approximately 5-foot-8, 140 pounds — entered the store that sits across the street from the Kaunakakai Post Office at 6:30 a.m., according to Molokai Police Seargent Randy Esperanza. According to the police report, the suspect was “possibly” wearing a mask and entered with “what appeared to be” a handgun.

When asked if the suspect was, in fact, wearing a mask, Pascua Store owner Rosida Montero said “yes.” According to Montero, employee Cresencia Befitel had just opened the store when the suspect came in and pointed the gun at her. He then swiftly moved around the counter and grabbed the cash register.

Montero said that Befitel is doing fine but may have been a little shaken. “She was dizzy or something,” said Montero.

Because the sealed, electronic register could not be easily opened, the suspect ran out the door and abandoned it in the empty lot on the other side of Ala Malama Street. Montero believes the suspect may have stashed it there in order to come back for it later.

But police found the register and are now holding on to it while this case is under investigation.

Montero said there was approximately $100 in the register when it was stolen. No merchandise was stolen.
