News briefs: Rollover accident; Pattern Energy takes on new name; Maui Paving fined for clear air violation

A 36-year old Molokai man was injured last Saturday when his Jeep rolled over west of Kaunakakai.

According to authorities, the single vehicle accident pinned the man under the car. He then had to be extricated with the help of Molokai Fire units.

The man was flown by Medivac to the Maui Memorial Medical Center with head and chest injuries.

New name for wind developer

Pattern Energy, the company chosen by Molokai Ranch to develop its land on the West End of Molokai into a wind farm, has changed its name.

Shortly after making its presence known on Molokai about a year ago, Pattern Energy joined with Biological Capital to form Molokai Renewables.

Now that Pattern Energy is expected to bid on the construction of a proposed undersea power transmission cable, the company has taken on the name Hawaii Interisland Cable.

Former CEO of Molokai Ranch Peter Nicholas made the announcement about Pattern Energy being the preferred wind developer about a year ago in a public meeting. At this time, no formal proposal or Environmental Impact Statement has been put forward for an industrial-scale wind power project on Molokai.

Maui Paving must pay $3,500

Maui Paving on Molokai must pay $3,500 in fines for Department of Health violations.

The DOH Clean Air Branch recently issued Notices of Violations and Orders against eight different companies.

During a records review it was found that Maui Paving failed to maintain pressure in its scrubber during production of asphalt at the Kalama’ula Industrial Park.

DOH officials say penalties are generally assessed on violators to remove any economic benefit they may have gained from their noncompliance and put them in a worse situation than those who comply with the law. Fines are paid into a revolving special fund used to prevent or minimize damage to the environment.
