Bar at Hotel Molokai reopens tomorrow with music

Water and fire damage can be seen at the entrance to the restaurant at Hotel Molokai. The bar reopens tomorrow, although it will be at least a few months before the kitchen can be rebuilt.

Hotel Molokai has shown resilience in recovering from the early morning fire of June 19 that destroyed the kitchen and laundry area.

While it may take up to six months to rebuild the kitchen, a little fire will not stop Lono and Na Kupuna from performing tomorrow in the Hula Shores dining area, as they have done every Friday before the fire.

Hotel Manager Michael Drew was able to receive a dispensary license from Maui County that will allow the bar to serve liquor. The regular liquor license requires a working kitchen on the property to serve alcohol. This new, expedited county permit will allow music and entertainment but no food to be served.

Clean up of the fire began last week. If the hotel can receive an expedited building permit from Maui County, crews can begin rebuilding the kitchen and laundry area in the same location once the clean up is completed.

The fire call came in at 3:20 a.m. on June 19. By the time fire crews arrived, the bottom floor of the two-story building was fully engulfed in flames. The cause of the fire has not been determined and is being considered accidental. Damage to the building and its contents has been estimated at $650,000, said Maui Fire Chief Lee Mainaga.

Meanwhile, the hotel has stayed open for its guests. The Sundown Deli has been delivering food and guests are given other dining options around the island. Laundry has been taken to a laundromat in Kaunakakai. Taxi services have also been available to guests.
