A hot-shooting David Rapanot led the Molokai High School boys basketball team to its first league win of the season Saturday night against St. Anthony on Maui at War Memorial Gym.

Overcoming a sick stomach and hurting knees on Friday, Rapanot, a junior, scored 21 of his 25 points in the first half as the Farmers defeated a young Trojan team 57-41. With the win, the Farmers are 1-1 in the Maui Interscholastic League.

The team’s first MIL game came Friday night against Seabury Hall at the Erdman Athletic Center on Maui. The Farmers could not hold on to a 1-point halftime lead and ended up losing 51-41 after the Spartans outscored them 17-7 in the fourth quarter. Oli Falealii led the Farmers with 21 points in the game.
After dropping four preseason games to mainland teams in the Lahainaluna Invitational Tournament, Saturday’s win was crucial in a regular season that only lasts nine games.

St. Anthony, which does not have a senior on the roster, trailed 21-15 after one period and 38-24 at halftime. The Trojans came out strong in the second half, outscoring Molokai 12-10 in the third quarter. The Farmers picked it up on defense and held St. Anthony to only 5 fourth quarter points.

Molokai Head Coach Lester Delos Reyes spoke to The Maui News about how the MIL is shaping up for this season: “Seabury is big, but the opportunity is there for teams like us. A lot of chance to break through. Today was a big difference between going home 0-2 and 1-1 in league. It is a morale booster for the boys.”

Girls basketball

Seabury visited Molokai this past weekend and took two games from the lady Farmers on Friday and Saturday at The Barn.

Molokai dropped a heartbreaker Friday night, losing 24-23 in overtime. Lehiwa Pedro scored 6 points for the lady Farmers.

On Saturday, the girls dropped another game to Seabury, 30-20. After defeating Lanai twice last week, the lady Farmers now have a 2-2 season record.
